A greenhouse is a perpetual season and an indoor agricultural space. It sustains optimal conditions for uninterrupted growth, creates a year-around consistency for continuous production and virtually eliminates seasons and geographical specificities. For BAHAR, the Istanbul site of the Sharjah Biennial 13 , “It is always spring” invites us to inhabit the greenhouse, which overexposes cycles and seasons and always keeps the soil and the seeds awake–in a perpetual state of insomnia. The spatial light and sound installation employs ‘grow lights’—grolux fluorescent light tubes which simulate the sun in horticulture and agriculture. How does it feel to constantly produce under flickering lights without sleep?

The sound piece, Agrosomnic Dreams, commissioned by the artist is composed by Tolga Tüzün. It is a pop tune that a farmer listens to while working in the far future in his ultra-tech greenhouse.

“It is always spring” employed notions of ‘grow light’, ‘greenhouse’ and ‘insomnia’.
