KNIT WALL, 2014

Knitted partition wall
Commissioned by: SALT
Location: SALT Beyoglu, Istanbul, Turkey
Year: 2014

We wanted this temporary wall to be reusable elsewhere once it was removed and to divide the
space gently. Therefore we decided to knit a wall from durable nautical ropes. Every layer of different
color is made from a single continuous rope that is around 100 meters. Once the need for the
division ceased to exist, the ropes were un-knit, clamps un-clamped and all the material was stored, ready for reuse
with zero material loss. The design with clamps and ropes practically allowed the material to be reknit
anywhere, in any shape possible.

We attached clamps to the I-beam above and attached the same clamps to the floor on a plywood
trim. The knitting of the wall required no prior knowledge of construction or knitting.
